The Cosumnes River Preserve, established in 1987 and spanning 51,000 acres south of Galt, protects the last free-flowing river in California's Central Valley.
The landscape around Galt carries the history of California's agricultural development. The Cosumnes River, flowing south of the city, was once surrounded by extensive oak tree savanna and riparian forests that covered the Central Valley floor. The Nature Conservancy established the Cosumnes River Preserve in 1987 with an initial 800-acre acquisition after identifying the best remaining valley oak stands along the lower river. The preserve has since grown to encompass more than 51,000 acres of protected wetlands, grasslands, vernal pools, and riparian oak woodlands.
The Cosumnes River is now recognized as the last free-flowing river in California's Central Valley, making it a unique natural landmark in a region where most rivers have been dammed and diverted for irrigation and municipal use. The preserve was designated as a National Natural Landmark and serves as an Important Bird Area, hosting more than 250 bird species. Visitors to the area can observe this restoration effort and the diverse wildlife that depends on the river, from threatened Swainson's hawks to California giant garter snakes, reflecting both the ecological significance and the collaborative work that protects what remains of the valley's natural heritage.
