Growing Sacramento-region community
The Sacramento metropolitan area, anchored by California's capital city, has grown into the 26th largest U.S. metropolitan region with 2.4 million residents as of 2020.
Galt is part of the Sacramento region, which for the past three decades has been among the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States. During the 1990s, the region's population growth exceeded 20 percent; in subsequent decades the rate held above 10 percent. The 2020 U.S. Census counted 2,397,382 people in the greater Sacramento metropolitan area. Galt itself has participated in that growth. The city was founded in 1869 by the Central Pacific Railroad as part of the first transcontinental railroad project. In 2020, the census recorded 25,383 residents, a 7.3 percent increase from the 2010 count of 23,647. The city has expanded with new family neighborhoods while maintaining the character of a smaller community within the broader Sacramento region.
